The Planner
and the Path
but the LORD establishes his steps.”
Here is the theological twin of Dipper 3:6 — human planning and divine establishing held in one breath, without apology for the tension. Notice what the verse does not say: it never scolds the planner. Both halves are stated as facts, both are good, and the wisdom is in seeing how they fit — the heart drafts the route; the LORD lays the actual stones.
The Springs
What the verse says: go ahead and plan — thoroughly, thoughtfully, with your whole heart. And then hold the plan loosely, because the steps that actually land under your feet are being placed by Someone with a better map.
Notice the division of labor: man plans the derek — the road in general, the intended direction — while God establishes the tsa'ad, the individual step. You draw in broad strokes; He works at footfall resolution. The verse is not a contest between the two. It is a collaboration with a senior Partner.
The Wells
A craftsman's word — the same verb used for the skilled designers of the tabernacle (Exodus 35:35), those who think out patterns and weave them. Planning, in Scripture, is not faithlessness; it is craftsmanship of the heart. The verse begins by dignifying what you do with calendars, budgets, and dreams: you were built to chashab.
The road-of-life word, back for its third appearance at this well (Days 3 and 14). Here it is the road as intended — the route a heart sketches out: this career, that city, this five-year shape of things. The planner's derek is real and legitimate. It is also, the verse gently notes, not the final document.
To make firm, to set solidly — used of God establishing His throne, the earth, the sanctuary. This is foundation-pouring vocabulary. What the LORD does to your steps is not vague oversight; He fixes them in place so they hold weight. Whatever ground you are actually standing on today — including ground you never planned — was poured.
A single stride — not the journey, the footfall. The word choice is the verse's quiet comfort: God's sovereignty operates at the resolution of the individual step, this Tuesday, this conversation, this door that opened when the planned one shut. Psalm 37:23 uses the same picture: “the steps of a man are established by the LORD, and he delights in his way.”

The Aquifer
Permission to plan
Some believers read verses like this and conclude that planning is presumption — that spiritual people drift and call it trust. The Hebrew forbids that reading: chashab is the tabernacle-craftsman's verb, and Proverbs elsewhere commands the planning it here describes (21:5, “the plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance”). Make the plan. Make it well. The verse's correction is aimed not at planning but at the white-knuckled grip.
The interruptions are load-bearing
Hold your history up to this verse and a pattern appears: the steps that most shaped you were rarely on your drawing. Joseph planned none of Egypt; Ruth planned none of Bethlehem; Paul planned Asia and was rerouted to Macedonia (Acts 16:6–10) — and Europe received the gospel by a canceled itinerary. What you filed under ‘interruption’ at the time, God had filed under kun. Some of your current detours will read that way in twenty years.
Open hands on the steering wheel
The working posture this verse teaches: plan like a craftsman, hold like a steward. Practically — make the plan, then pray it back to God with the amendment clause attached: as You will. James 4:13–15 gives the exact grammar: ‘if the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’ The difference between a surrendered plan and a grasped one is invisible on paper and unmistakable the day the plan breaks.
Companion verses, one truth
Set the twin verses side by side and the month's teaching comes into focus. Dipper 3:6: know Him on every road, and He makes the path straight. Today: draft the road freely, and He sets each step. Both verses assign you the relationship and God the engineering. The consistent portrait across Proverbs is not a God who resents your plans, but a Father who reads them over your shoulder with a better pen in His hand.

Answer honestly. Write your answers down — ink slows the heart enough to hear.
Which is your natural failure mode — planning with a white-knuckled grip, or drifting and calling it trust? What has that tendency cost you?
Name the biggest ‘interruption’ of your life so far. With hindsight, what was God establishing in those unplanned steps that your drawn route could never have reached?
What plan are you currently gripping hardest? Pray it back to God this week with James 4:15's amendment clause — what changes in you when you actually say ‘if the Lord wills’?
God works at footfall resolution — this Tuesday, this conversation. Where might a step already under your feet today be one He established, that you have been treating as a detour?
The craftsman's verb dignifies planning done well. Is there an area where you have been drifting — finances, health, a relationship — that actually needs a chashab-quality plan drawn this month?
